Somewhere in the moving, the person on the other side becomes the thing standing between us and the next task. The Pivot An exchange has two people inside it, each carrying whatever the day has already handed them into the moment they share. We rarely know what that is. We just assume there’s space for one more request. Is the person in front of us the point, or are they in our way of the point? Most days, without meaning to, we treat them as the second.
